    Dr. Alexandre Kimenyi ,

August 15, 1948 -June 11, 2010

With a heavy heart, we announce the death of Dr. Alexandre Kimenyi, a professor of Ethnic Studies at California State University, Sacramento; founding member and patron of the Friends of Rwanda Association (FORA), and a great mentor to many. Dr. Kimenyi was a renowned African linguist, an accomplished scholar and prolific writer/poet (see further: www.kimenyi.com), advocate of justice and activist in the struggle to end the Rwanda genocide, and educator of global understanding and prevention of genocide and human rights violations.

 

Dr. Kimenyi is survived by his wife, Mathilde Mukantabana (Professor of History at Consumnes River College, Sacramento); sons (Gitego Shema and Ndahiro Bazimya) and daughter (Saro Kanyambo), brother (Ange Twagirayezu), sisters (Jose M. Muyango and Jacqueline Mucumagendo), and a host of nephews, nieces, and in-laws.

 

Funeral Service: Saturday, June 19, 2010, 2-4pm, East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary, 9189 E. Stockton Blvd, Elk Grove Ca 95624.

 

Memorial Service: June 19, 2010, 4-9pm, Alumni Center, California State University, Sacramento.

 

Public Viewing: 12-8pm, Friday, June 18, 2010 East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary, 9189 E. Stockton, Elk Grove, Ca 95624.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be sent to FORA (Friends of Rwanda Association), P. O. Box 1311, Elk Grove Ca 95759; a nonprofit, 501c(3) organization dedicated to assisting orphans of the Rwanda genocide, and one of Kimenyi’s humanitarian projects.
